Dear Sydney,
Thank you for your kind words. I am sorry you and your family are moving again. I promise you you will be fine. I read about your new school today and it looks wonderful! Can you do me a favor? Please make sure to take this note and tuck it safely inside your favorite book so it doesn't get lost. Each time you read it I want you to remember that you matter to me. You have already made this world more beautiful just by being you. And your smile is a perfect reflection of what is inside of you!
Love, Mrs. Roberts
P.S.
Please ask your new teacher to look for a note from me in the front office of your new school. I wrote a letter and sent it out this morning. The letter says...
To: Sydney's W. New Teacher
You are about to meet one of the nicest people I have ever met. Her name is Sydney W. I am certain you will discover that she is a great student who loves to smile, work hard and share ideas that inspire a new way to look at the world around us. Thank you in advance for welcoming Sydney into your class!

My viewpoint...
I found Sydney's letter on my desk at the end of a busy school day. My heart broke knowing that Sydney and her family would be moving again. Sadly, as a veteran teacher I am familiar with the swinging door of students forced to move because of the downturn in the economy. As educators, we now share the growing challenge of trying to teach to a generation of students who have grown up dealing with the continuous changing of schools. The experience has stripped many of our kids of their academic and social anchors used to build social currency and self confidence. To help combat this problem and the isolation many of my students may feel entering into a new school environment I invest a few moments of my time to send a personal note to the teaching staff receiving my students. This small gesture should make it a little easier for their new teacher to see the gifts and talents my students carry with them. Too often kids arrive at school and their cumulative file doesn't show up for months. When a new child walks into my classroom I always think of Sydney and take the time to ask my new students about successes I missed out on before our paths crossed for the first time.
